Development and experimentation is a key focus at Playdead and between the gaps of developing projects, we also create our own work. This allows us to occasionally flex our creative muscles, push new techniques and test the boundaries of new tech and software. The nature of Beneath is to create a certain unease, while showing beauty beneath the surface. It is an abstract representation of trends, with topical undercurrents, not taking itself too seriously.

COCO – Origin Colombia: 8 days, 1000km, in search of art and chocolate. We journey across Colombia with COCO Chocolatier, producing 5 short films tracing the origin of their chocolate. Tula Precision was hunting for the right leather to match original photos they’d discovered of an incredibly rare 1920’s Bugatti Brescia that they were restoring. Playdead were commissioned in February 2019 by BBC Cyrmu Wales, to create a series of animated films for BBC Bitesize: KS3 Science/CA3 Gwyddoniaeth. The delivery included 17 short-form videos to be delivered in Welsh and English. Using a combination of live-action filmed against green screen and combined with 2D motion graphics and set within bespoke 3D environments.
