Ostro is a contemporary and exemplary low-energy dwelling in semi-rural Stirling. A Certified Passivhaus, the building achieves extremely low operational and embodied carbon emissions and attained ‘Gold’ accreditation in Section 7 of the Scottish Technical Standards. Adopting a fabric first approach, the building minimises energy demand before turning to renewable technologies, which is articulated in the building’s concept. Internally the spatial layout is organised around an exquisitely crafted black stained timber joinery element: a ‘box within a box’ that houses […]

House for a Chemist
‘Create a whisper, not a shout’ was the brief given to Brown & Brown Architects by their clients, who have raised their family on the Ayrshire coast within sight of the Isle of Arran, and feel have a deep-rooted connection to this stretch of coastline. It was very important that any new additions were visually subservient to the original house, a traditional Victorian villa of red sandstone, which had faced the elements for more than 150 years. ‘House for a […]

The converted building was a commercial unit built in the early 1900’s. Most recently it operated as a sauna until purchased in 2014 by a developer who planned to convert it into a three bedroomed residential dwelling. Work started in 2014 saw multiple partial structural changes. 12 months in, work stopped and remained static for six years. As a shell, the property offered the opportunity to explore options away from conforming to the surrounding tenements. As my first development, the aim […]

Responding to the client’s design brief the underlying concept for this home is about creating a natural environment with a calming vibe that sits lightly on the site allowing the owners to step back to a simpler way of living and to re-connect with nature. The house is conceived as a pair of small-scale timber cabins sitting on a steeply terraced site within mature woodlands and is designed as a response to the challenging topography and geology of the site […]

Mannal House is a new 4-bedroom family home on the Isle of Tiree on the west coast of Scotland that sits high above the sea looking east towards the mainland over Mull. The site is on the working yard of the main house of the township of Mannal where the previous owner sold the dwelling and our site as two separate lots. The site is therefore peppered with various farm buildings, ruins and a byre in which our new house […]

Ardscalpsie Farmhouse is an assortment of existing farm steadings linked together to provide one family dwelling. The project is a complete alteration & refurbishment project. The project sits within a rural setting which offers a line of continuity between architecture and landscape. This was fundamental to our conceptual approach where the manipulation of material, mass, light, and space roots the building to its site and the wider landscape. The design brief and spatial concept was principally to create […]

Loader monteith was commissioned by a creative couple – an architect and a ceramicist – to unify a subdivided victorian merchants house in glasgow, turning two separate flats into a bright family home with pottery studio. The clients wanted an architecturally distinct extension that complemented and contrasted with the existing period villa. The brief also required the house to be future-proofed for independent living in later life, ensuring the home will be enjoyed for many years to come. To meet […]

The project brief was for a new house and artist’s studio sitting within an exceptional mature garden. The building would strive to form a series of internal and external spaces which celebrated the different qualities and aspects of the garden and broader views. The house was also to provide a backdrop for the clients to display and enjoy their collection of artworks. A narrow lane leading to the site gave away little of the extraordinary garden and wider views. Winding […]
