Hazel Roe-Bose

Young Architect of the Year
Summary
Since joining Brown & Brown Hazel has grown into a multitude of roles, from acting as project architect, as well as dealing with inquiries and managing client relationships. She is a remarkably passionate and talented designer, who has also taken on a mentoring role with younger members of staff, in order to aid their development and growth. With responsibility across several areas of the practice, Hazel contributes significantly to the ethos of the firm, and her sensitivity, and clarity of thought bring benefits from practice management to complex construction detailing. She is instrumental in the development of younger members of staff, whilst also acting as project architect across numerous projects, located from the South of England to Northern Scotland. Whilst it is normal for nominations such as this to be a list of an individual’s achievements, it is the intangibles and unheralded impact of Hazel’s work that is the most impactful. Nobody works harder, or has more consideration for others in the performance of their role as an architect, and this consistent sensitivity, extended to clients and colleagues alike, has had a remarkable impact on the quality of our work, and the dynamic we have with our clients. Hazel is as humble as she is talented, and would never consider nominating herself for an award such as this, which illustrates the mix of humility and undeniable ability that leads us to nominate her.
Hazel brings a sensitivity and creativity to every project, which is rooted in a mixture of architectural talent and the ability to empathise with clients. Every response is unique, by the consistency of her clear-thinking, and understanding of client needs and wants, is applied across the breadth of her work. Projects draw inspiration from a broad range of architectural sources, inspired partly by Hazel’s upbringing in Canada and Tasmania, as well as by her architectural education in Finland. Her design solutions are always driven by context, and react to the sites in a way that is both complementary and challenging as the project requires. Over the last year Hazel has been involved with the completion of House for a Chemist, the contemporary extension and refurbishment of a Victorian villa on the Ayrshire coast, in addition to acting as designer and project architect on houses in Aberdeenshire, The Borders, and the Highlands, the renovation of a historic mill in Somerset, a new church hall and extension in Peterhead, and a large renovation project on Orkney (see images). Whether leading a project in her own right, or working as part of a team, she has brought unquestionable talent, leadership, and understanding to every aspect of her work. All of Hazel’s design work draws inspiration from vernacular building forms, but is also willing to question and challenge ideas of appropriateness, in order to create original and distinctive contemporary works of architecture.
