Summary
Owner Dario Marchetti had run the ionic traditional bar and restaurant “Ingram Wynd” serving pints and traditional Scottish fare in Glasgow’s Merchant City for 15 years. He realized that Covid 19 had already changed the hospitality scene, with a huge new demand for take-away meals. They invested in the latest software to allow customers to click and collect and also order from their table. The new restaurant is Glasgow's first to be designed specifically with covid in mind.
The goal was to offer up something a little different. The result is an all-day eatery which acts as a platform for artisan producers serving locally-sourced produce “morning, noon and night for breakfast, lunch and dinner, from coffee to cocktails”.
Its industrial chic ‘urban botanical interior’ with exposed brick walls complete with custom design six-metre neon sign, has been brought to life by a team of designers and craftspeople. Artist Ranald MacColl painted and distressed the brick walls and columns, while bespoke chairs, tables and hanging planters, as well as a custom-made gantry, were built by Andy McDonald from Retrometal. The 1970’s feature pendants were reclaimed from the old Olivetti factory in Italy.
The interior is stylishly put together for the current pandemic, with tables well spaced, and the vibe is bright, airy and inviting. Tina Marchetti says: “We’re all-inclusive and have challenged ourselves to create a vibrant, chilled environment that translates well throughout the day and into the evening”
Inside and out, Canteen 58 is ambitious bold and visually impressive.
