Lower Tullochgrue

Award

Lower Tullochgrue is the refurbishment and extension of a traditional house in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. A dilapidated steading has been replaced by a contemporary extension, with a timber and glass upper volume above a stone plinth, with the existing topography of the site maintained at all times. The brief was for the creation of a home which could be used by numerous members of a large family, both collectively and in smaller family groups. This drove […]

House in Bearsden

Award

Set within a leafy secluded suburban area of Bearsden, our house was developed as a simple one to two storey four bedroom house within a former vacant plot. Previously a domestic tennis court, the confines of the site are strongly defined by a perimeter of mature Scots pine trees. The project was conceptually conceived as a brick house that masters a subservient open-plan pavilion to its long narrow site between two existing residential properties. Upper Parkbrae

Commendation

Our design is comprised of a timber and glass box, which is cantilevered above the landscape, and sited on a clay brick wall which runs both inside and outside of the house. A simple materials palette helps the building blend into the landscape, while large expanses of South-facing glass allow the house to benefit from solar gain, with the heating system fed by a combination of solar panel and the water-heating wood-burning stove.

The Den

Nomination

The Den is tucked away high on the hill above Tighnabruaich with an exceptional outlook over the Kyles of Bute. The brief was to transform two dilapidated flats into a remarkable home and studio space all within a modest 90sqm footprint split over 3 storeys.   During the initial work to connect the two levels and strip out the old finishes, a rich palette of materials was uncovered, which, when combined with the qualities of light flooding between floor joists of the different levels, created a unique and enchanting […]
