Robert Townshend, DipLA, CMLI, Hon FRBS
Principal
Townshend Landscape Architects
Robert Townshend founded the practice in 1988. He has gained considerable experience in landscape architecture, urban design and environmental analysis through his work on a wide range of both national and international commissions and continues to influence all aspects of the practice development.
Through his interest and continued study of how we use our environment Robert has shaped the practice design solutions in the belief that successful, sustainable urban landscapes are articulated through understanding people’s interaction with their surroundings. This philosophy has built and inspired the practice approach to schemes in many different settings, climates and cultures to ensure these are comfortable, engaging, and interactive places which are locally appropriate and invite people in. His belief that effective pieces of urban public realm can and should knit effectively with the fabric of their setting, and often fascinating past, is a key component of the practice ethos.
In addition, he has contributed to the profession delivering lectures and seminars in the UK and abroad, including the Landscape Institute 2012 Jellicoe Lecture on public realm-led urban regeneration. With his considerable interest and involvement in public art Robert became an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors in 1992.
