Glasgow City Council has shown off custom birthday branding to help usher in the city’s 850th anniversary next year.
Glaswegian design agency Tangent are celebrating their home city with a badge identity that references past and future success through the use of abstract symbols.
The customisable logo can be adapted by groups, individuals and businesses with a library of symbols representing different aspects of history, initially including a bell, fish, bird and tree drawn from Glasgow’s coat of arms which recount the legend of its patron saint, St Mungo.
The digital representation of a physical badge will be offered free of charge together with a library of icons and the ability to curate your own to reflect the individuality of all citizens.
Susanne Miller, chief executive of Glasgow City Council said: “Marking the city’s 850th birthday is an opportunity that goes beyond celebrations and commemorations. It acknowledges the contributions of generations who have shaped the city, gives a platform to grow a shared sense of belonging and invites people to guide our future.
“This new Glasgow850 brand is an imaginative and inclusive way for people to take part and express what Glasgow means to them and helping them to tell their story.”
A year-long programme of events and activities is planned through 2025, unified by the Glasgow 850 branding.
