Summary
The goal of the development is to create a new vibrant residential scheme for Newcraighall, providing high quality, mixed tenure housing and a new urban park which will see the reinvigoration of this site in East Edinburgh. The new Linear Park is designed with residents at the forefront, with the aim to enhance the biodiversity of the area, increase the variety of park environments in the neighbourhood and help to promote physical active travel for all abilities.
The site provides a key opportunity for future growth which would address local housing needs and contribute to the maintenance of housing land supply. The site is well served by train, bus and cycle links which all play a key role in the emerging layouts and proposals for the development.
Newcraighall will be an inspiring place to live. The carefully selected design decisions will help to create a coherent urban environment, strengthening the urban qualities such as vistas, routes, thresholds, public and private realm, and a sense of arrival. By putting people and community first, this Newcraighall development can create better connected, healthier and happier places to live in.
The significant contribution to the open space, ecological habitats and biodiversity in the area is a real positive to proposals. The main element of which is the linear park which runs the full length of the project boundary to the west and north. It extends over 2Ha and combines three leading strands of landscape typology to create an integrated and relevant public park. Central to the park is the sinuous ribbon of gentle mounds and integrated natural play elements, providing intimate sheltered places, and exposed spaces on the top of the mounds to capture views and spark the playful and curious minds.
Linked into these ribbons are native shrub thickets which provide habitat for birds and sheltered spaces for smaller invertebrates. Large open grass amenity spaces provide the final strand giving space to the community for active recreation. Paths dissect the park, with a major cycle route running the full length, connecting to wider city wide links. To the south there are a number of allotment spaces for the community and providing much needed productive growing spaces. A living landscape, creating a new identity and community focal point.
