Summary
Iran has one of the oldest civilisations in the world. It is a country of rugged mountain ranges, vast deserts and lush meadows and forests. Iranians have long shaped this landscape and the landscape has long shaped their art. Nature is at the heart of its culture which has created a rich visual tradition from its earliest days.
The University of St Andrews and The Sarikhani Collection combine an awe-inspiring suite of manuscripts, objects and ceramics spanning from 3,500 BC to the 18th century. These precious artefacts are on public display in Scotland for the very first time.
Opened in January 2024 at the University of St Andrews’ Wardlaw Museum, 'Iran: Wonders of Nature' presents, for the first time in Scotland, some of these unique and epic Iranian artefacts.
This exhibition concept, designed by Lateral North, centres on the Islamic garden or chaharbagh. Beginning in the garden, the exhibition weaves through four key themes linking the Iranian culture to the natural world which are separated by intricately designed Iranian-style screens.
Through the creation of intricately detailed illustrations of key manuscripts and artefacts, captivating film, bespoke plinth and mount designs, animations and even smells, this exhibition takes visitors on a journey through Iran’s history immersing visitors in Persian culture and its relationship with nature.
Nature has always moulded Iran and its people. The exhibition journey begins in a garden.
