Summary

A Wonderbox of fun
A quarter of children in Scotland are growing up in poverty and hardship, depriving them of the opportunity to learn for fun. Wonderbox is a free activity pack that supports kids’ wellbeing, encourages them to explore their curiosity and builds confidence through creativity.

Each edition includes a journal with learning prompts, activity ideas and space for kids to express themselves. The characterful illustration style and playful copy radiate fun in every detail—delivering a bit of joy to kids who don’t have much to feel joyful about.

Learning through play
Every element of Wonderbox is an opportunity to play, starting with the packaging. The cotton drawstring bag comes with fabric pens for kids to personalise them, and stickers of skateboarding dinosaurs, dancing blueberries and flying books to decorate their journals with. The activities inside are designed to appeal to kids’ natural inquisitiveness and give them the freedom to approach learning in a way that works for them.

Coping with big feelings
A 2022 study by Action for Children found that 47% of kids from low-income backgrounds worry about their family having enough money to live comfortably. Activities like creating a feelings playlist and doodling how their moods feel are included in each journal, to help kids reflect on their emotions. To guide kids through these activities we introduced Moodle, a character who personifies big, messy feelings.

A wonderful result
Wonderbox is distributed in partnership with local charities and organisations, including food banks, women’s aid charities, housing associations, and young carer organisations. Together, we’ve provided over 20,000 Wonderboxes to kids across Scotland—from Stranraer to Shetland. And the best bit? Of the kids who've received a Wonderbox, 95% found it helped them feel less isolated and stressed.
