Summary

The UK housing system isn’t working, leading to a steep increase in homelessness.

In Manchester alone, 1 in 74 people are homeless , and local charities like Mustard Tree are creaking at the seams.

Supporting Mustard Tree on World Homeless Day, The Homeless Listings highlight the stark reality of those seeking shelter in the city. Because unlike what some politicians think, homelessness is not a ‘lifestyle choice’.

Taking inspiration from well-known estate agents in Manchester, The Homeless Listings are designed in the guise of property listings, taking the viewer by surprise. Instead of desirable homes, the viewer is presented with damp sleeping bags, shocking floorplans, and a grim picture of homelessness.

The listings were strategically placed in out-of-home sites surrounding the 2023 Conservative Party Conference in Manchester. As well as real estate signs placed in prime spots around the city centre.

In a housing and cost of living crisis, the campaign is a call for local people and businesses to help those in need.

“The harsh reality is that more and more people are homeless in Manchester right now (…) This campaign won’t fix the problem, but it will expose how hopeless the situation is for the many facing yet another night sleeping rough, or on someone’s sofa.”
– Jo Walby, CEO, Mustard Tree
