Summary

The National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) is an industry-led international centre of manufacturing expertise located at the heart of the new Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland (AMIDS) where industry, academia and public sector work together to transform skills, productivity, and innovation.

The new energy carbon neutral in operation, BREEAM ‘outstanding’ facility is about creating a high-quality, open and collaborative environment that supports healthy working, fosters collaboration and promotes sustainability. Based at the Netherton Campus adjacent Glasgow Airport, NMIS supports manufacturing businesses, attracts investment, and connects Scotland’s engineering universities and colleges. It’s a catalyst for future development, attracting world-leading companies and institutions at the cutting edge of manufacturing.

NMIS comprises four principal elements:

• Digital Factory – for collaborative manufacturing research, technology, and solution development.
• Innovation Collaboratory – for manufacturing technology application and process development.
• Manufacturing Skills Academy – Scotland’s hub for manufacturing skills and education.
• “Forum” – interface with the wider AMIDS site plus access to business support and links to external organisations.

Design drivers, approach, and ambition:

• A beacon for regeneration – prominent, instantly recognisable but also undoubtedly Scottish in character,
• Engagement with public, industry and university – presenting a striking image to the world,
• Masterplan Response – globally significant location where national and international companies will cluster and prosper through collaboration,
• Flexibility – clearly zoned, legible plan and repetitive building module allowing simple expansion to realise future demands,
• Adaptability – access/plant locations are paramount, allowing sufficient flexibility for future expansion without significant disruption to logistics and day to day operation,
• Engineering expression and innovation – form and aesthetic derived from traditional industrial manufacturing structures, combined with innovative technology and engineering innovation, unique engineered glulam & CLT frame saving over 700T of carbon,
• High quality healthy workplace – exemplifies the best in healthy building design, extensive natural light, natural finishes, bespoke green wall, internal trees,
• Exemplary approach to sustainability and climate mitigation – NMIS is innovative, ambitious, collaborative, and bold in creating a sustainable building using clean, low carbon infrastructure, and exemplify solutions that enable development, societal benefit and tackle climate change mitigation at scale – net zero for regulated energy, fossil fuel free, low embodied carbon and adapted to future climate change, using green roofs, rainwater harvesting & SUDS. NMIS achieves:
o RIBA 2030 and LETI Net Zero Operational Energy Metrics <55kWh/m2/a (for office/ non-domestic regulated and non-regulated energy based on TM54, client installed equipment with full PV offset),
o Embodied Carbon of 1,048KgC02/m2 (A1-C4) and ‘up-front’ value of 843KgC02/m2 (A1-A5).
